Description
Photographic portrait of Mrs. Maria Elisalde Sepulveda, the wife of Jose Diego Sepulveda of Palos Verdes Ranch, ca.1850-1870. She can be seen from the chest up looking slightly to the left. She has long wavy hair worn down to her shoulders, and can be seen wearing a frilly frock with a broach at the neck. Diego Sepulveda owned the 3200 acre Palos Verde Rancho and a large parcel in the mountains of San Bernardino. Her father was the first civil head of the Missions. Half-tone print.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
