Description
Photograph of a locomotive train billowing steam, showing Mount Shasta in the background, Siskiyou County, ca.1900. The train can be seen across center, with the front of the train visible at left. Six men can be seen standing in the doorways of one of the two cars, while tall pine trees are visible behind the train. A snow-covered mountain can be seen in the background, while dirt and weeds are visible on the flat land in the foreground. The sides of the train read, "M.C.R.R.R", "United States Mail Railway Post Office 01", "McCloud River R.R.", "Baggage", "US Mail 02" and "Wells Fargo & Co. Express". A boxcar at right reads, "R&M 60091". Photoprint reads: "Passenger train on McCloud River Rail Road".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
