Description

Photograph of an unidentified oil refinery, ca.1940. What appears to be a large, metal spool stand in the tall grass in the foreground. The large wheels of the spool obstruct the view of the tall, skeletal towers which stand in the background underneath the electrical lines which extend over the field below. Puffs of smoke float around the towers from the refinery which stands out of view beneath tall pipes which stand on the right of the towers.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
