Photograph of San Gabriel Dam construction, showing men using jackhammers, 1936. About a dozen men stand on the dam site with matching work clothes and hard hats. A man with his shirt tucked in his side pocket shovels loose dirt in the foreground on the right while most of the other men dig at the ground with jackhammers. Large trucks drive along a curving dirt road around the hills in the background while a metal tower stands on the left.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
