Description
Photograph of a horse-drawn carriage on the edge of a Summerland oil field, 1902. A man dressed in a suit sits in the open-air carriage at left, his back turned to the viewer. Slightly right of this, a second man tends the horse, which is badly emaciated. Filling the background, oil derricks can be seen on the bank of a body of water, over which they extend by way of bridge. A wooden roof is also visible to the right, free of any house. A set of large metal wheels stands in the left mid-ground. Back of photoprint reads, "Pipe sticking out indicates that it is a shallow well (1400 ft.). Looking west".
