Description
Photograph of railway standing on tracks, San Pedro, 1911. At center, a large rectangular railway car is visible. Large portions at the front and rear of the car are open near its entrances. An entrance is seen on each end of the car, and a small stairwell lies below the doorway. Small hand rails are seen next to the entrances on both sides of the car. Two sets of benches are visible behind the grid rails. To the right, a small stool is seen near the front of the car. Along the side of the car, four square windows are visible. The numbers "32" are seen below the windows of the car. A large banner above the windows reads: "San Pedro 5th St. LA Alameda St". At the top of the car, a trolley pole is seen extending to a wire above the car. Below the car, four steel wheels can be seen from the side supporting the vehicle. In the background, three tall trees rise against the plain sky. Description on the back of the photograph reads: "Los Angeles Pacific Co. #32 at 14th & Beacon in San Pedro-- 1911".; Although the photograph is dated by 1911, there is a chance that it was taken a bit later: Los Angeles Pacific did not serve San Pedro, so the photo was made after the "Great Merger" of 1911, when various properties were divided between the Harriman and Huntington interests and LAP merged with Pacific Electric (PE) which served San Pedro. Los Angeles Pacific was known for its green cars. Until they could be repainted into the new PE red, they served over the entire system.
