Description
Photograph of a view of Mount Whitney, CA, [s.d.]. Wotan's Throne is in the center left of the image and Mount Whitney is in the center right of the image. Mountain sides can be seen sloping upwards at left and right, while tall pine trees are visible growing in the resulting crevice between the two slopes from bottom left towards center. Rock formations and peaks are visible on top of the mountains at left and in the background. Trees can be seen on the sides of the mountains throughout, while boulders can be seen in the extreme right foreground. Originally, the image was captioned as "Observatory Peak from Mount Lowe [Wilson?], Altadena, [s.d.]".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
