Photograph of an exterior view of the Shell Oil Company, showing a painter at work, ca.1940. The man in coveralls and a lightly-colored hat slips on a glove at center while facing the pipes on the right. The freshly-painted pipes are lightly-colored with a small portion to the right of the man which is still darkly-colored. The pipes extend around several tall, thick cylinders into a knot of intersecting pipes which continue into the background.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
