Photograph of an exterior view of the third Petroleum refinery, ca. 1940. Short, cylindrical structures with staircases leading to their tops stand in rows in the foreground with tall cylindrical towers standing behind them. Several platforms wrap around various levels of the towers and an apparatus sits at each tower's top. Below the towers, the floor is crowded with interweaving pipes which wrap around the many machines of the refinery. Beyond the field of pipes stand many long, low-standing building which extend into the distance on the right.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
