Description
Photograph of the Civil Aeronautics Administration testing for crash-resistant fuel cells, ca.1950. In a dramatic test for crash-resistant fuel cells for commercial airplanes, a tank is catapulted seventy miles an hour against sand bags and steel at left. The latter was conducted in demonstration by the Civil Aeronautics Administration at Indianapolis. The objective of the tests is to find an airplane fuel tank that will not rupture and cause destructive fires after those crashes in which their passengers would normally be expected to survive. Unites States Rubber Co. has been cooperating with the CAA for nearly six years in the project, supplying many materials and flexible bladder-type cells of nylon and rubber which resist rupture.
