Description Photograph of an exterior view of Shell Oil Company refinery at night, ca.1940. The refinery is at center and is a tall structure that is made mostly of metal beams. Several flights of stairs are visible at left, and an extensive network of pipes can be seen near the ground at center. Three tall smokestacks rise up from the pipes at center. There are bright lights in several places high on the structure.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
