Description

Photograph of an exterior view of an unidentified oil refinery, ca.1940. Short cylindrical structures with wide diameters stand in oil-stained yards with pipes surrounding them. Short, wooden structures stand among these cylinders with the taller structures crowded behind them. Many skeletal, octagonal buildings stand in a row on the right with tall pipes in a parallel row to the left of them. A taller, frame-like structure stands on the left while shorter, cylindrical towers surround it in the yard below.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
