Description

Photograph of an exterior view of an unidentified oil refinery, ca.1940. Two thick, cylindrical structures with ladders leading up their left sides stand in a bare field at center while a pile of long, metal pipes and a small, wooden structure stand along the side of a paved road in the foreground. Many small cylinders lie on their sides in a row in front of a skeletal building on the right while tall pipes stand among the buildings on the left. Similar buildings and machinery extend towards the background where a faint city can be seen in the distance.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
