Description

Photograph of a Shell Oil Company employee at work in the interior of the building, ca.1940. Thick, oil-stained pipes on the left connect to a central pipe overhead and to smaller pipes which appear to run into the floor at center. Dark boxes stand with dials monitoring "gallons" sit in a row on a metal platform which lies in front of the pipes. A man in oil-spotted coveralls and glasses manipulates the farthest box on the right.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
