Description
Photograph of an aerial view of flooding in Arcadia, California, 1938. To the left of center, extending to the right top of the image, automobiles traverse the First Avenue that has been inundated with water. At center, this road intersects Huntington Drive (part of Historic Route 66) which is largely dry, save for to the left and at the intersection. The building at upper left at the intersection is the Arcadia City Hall at that time; it moved to a new building in 1940. The Southern Pacific tracks can be seen on Santa Clara Street (one block above Huntington Drive) intersecting the Santa Fe mainline which runs diagonally through the intersection of Santa Clara and 1st Ave. The Pacific Electric tracks are the ones visible the next block up. The surrounding blocks are filled with grass, trees and what appear to be commercial or municipal buildings. Photoprint reads: "This photograph is loaned to you. Please return to: Illustrator. L.A. City Planning Dept. Rm.361 F City Hall, Los Angeles, California". Note: Originally, the image was captioned as, "Aerial view of flooding in Monrovia, 1938".
