Description

Photograph of a view of Venice Beach looking north towards Santa Monica Beach, 1910-1920. The ocean is at left and center and is crowded with swimmers. A narrow strand of sandy beach is visible at right, and many beachgoers can be seen. Running parallel to the shoreline is a row of large beach club buildings. In the distance at left, a pier is visible as it juts out into the water. Several structures can be seen on the pier, including a large wooden rollercoaster.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
