Description
Photograph of a view of Spring Street looking north from below Third Street in Los Angeles, ca.1907-1912. Spring Street is at center and heads away from the viewer before disappearing into the distance. There are two sets of streetcar tracks running down the middle of the road, and a streetcar is visible at center. Several horse-drawn vehicles are making their way down the street, and two early-model automobiles are parked in the foreground, one on each side of the road. The street is bordered by tall commercial buildings, and many pedestrians are walking in front of them. The tower of the Los Angeles Theatre building is visible in the distance at left. The Lankershim Building (1887-1990s; at south-east corner with Third Street) is at right and the Stimpson Building (1893-1963; at north-east corner with Third Street) and Ramona Hotel (1886-1912; at south-west corner with Third Street) are at left. Other buildings in this photo include: Douglas Building (built in 1898; at north-west corner with Third Street); Workman Block (just to the left of Stimson Block); Germain Building (name painted on side); Lang Building (a shorter building, just north of the Germain Building); Wilcox Building (built in 1896, shortened to one story in 1971; at south-east corner with Second Street); Bryson-Bonebrake Block (1888-1934; at north-west corner with Second Street); Equitable Savings Bank (1907-circa1927 ); at north-east corner with First Street); Los Angeles Trust & Savings Bank (built in 1902; at north-east corner with Second Street); Schumacher Block (1883-1930; its west side between First & Franklin Streets); Wilson Block - (built in 1889; at south-east corner with First Street); Phillips Block (1887-1912; at north-west corner with Franklin Street). Legible signs include, from left to right, "309 Cutlery", "Automobile for Rent", "Germain Building", "Globe-Wernicke Plastic", "West Ninth Street", "American [?] Bank", "Merchants National Bank:, and "Naumann & Sch[?]".
