Photograph of lumberers posing around a portion of a large tree trunk near Visalia, 1900-1940. At center a very large tree trunk is visible laying on its side. Three men are visible sitting on different rungs of a wooden ladder that runs from the ground to the top of the trunk. Another man sits on top of the trunk to the left of the ladder, while three men stand in front of the trunk near the ladder. The man standing to the far left is holding axe in his left hand that is stuck in the trunk. The men are visible wearing long sleeved shirts, suspenders, and hats. Lumber and branches are visible in the foreground, while tall pine trees stand in the background.

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
