Photograph of a panoramic view of Los Angeles from First Street and Hill Street looking southeast, ca.1893. Several palm trees can be seen in the right foreground. The roofs of dwellings dominate the foreground, while commercial buildings of downtown Los Angeles predominate in the distance. The photograph features the following buildings: Highland Villa (built in 1886) can be seen in the foreground, at far left (through tree), located at the top of 1st Street and Hill Street; just right to it, the Second County Court House (1891-1936) is visible featuring a clock tower reading 1:12; in the middle, at center, the Phillips Block (1887-1912) - a multistory structure with many windows - can be seen ; the Second Los Angeles Times Building (1886-1910) is visible in the middle, at right (a domed three-story structure with a flag); the Larronde Block (1883-circa 1930) is visible to the right (east) of the Los Angeles Times building, located at the north-west corner of Spring and First Streets; the Los Angeles National Bank Building (1885-circa 1930) can be seen above the Larronde Block, located at north-east corner of Spring and First Streets; the Pithian Castle Block (built in 1877) is one building left (north) of the bank. A few horse-drawn vehicles and pedestrians are visible in the street below at right. Legible signs include: "Job printing", "[...] Jevne", and "Telegraph office".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
