Description

Photograph of a street scene showing the Tremont Hotel, 1900-1940. A three story building is visible at center with a protruding covered walkway leading to the front door at street level. Balconies on the second and third stories extend the length of the building. Concrete columns are visible on the first two stories, while ornate arches and columns are visible on the third story. A fence is visible running along the flat roof. The building to the right is two stories tall with multiple tall arched windows on the second story. A tall tower with a clock and cross on top is visible to the right of the second building. A one-story building is visible to the left of the first building. Men are visible sitting on benches, congregating in groups, or driving buggies in front of the buildings. A dirt road is visible in the foreground. Photoprint reads: "On the Shasta Route of the Southern Pacific".

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
