Description
Photograph of four drawings depicting various scenes in Porterville, 1900-1940. A drawing reading, "Pioneer Land Company. Fig tree, said to be the largest in the state" is visible at top left. It depicts a man sitting on a horse at left looking at a man standing on the branch of a tree at right. The man on the branch is pointing upwards with his right hand. Both men wear hats and have mustaches, while a second tree and flat, open land are depicted in the background.; A drawing reading, "View of Main Street in Porterville, Cal. Looking North" is visible at top right. It depicts a wide dirt road lined with buildings running from the foreground to the background. The building at left reads, "Pioneer Hotel" and has a covered walkway. Four men are depicted standing in front of a utility pole at left, while at least five carriages are visible on the road. Hills and a building with a tower are depicted in the background.; A drawing reading, "Palm Tree. Pioneer Land Co. Porterville" is visible at bottom right. A palm tree with rounded fronds is depicted at center, while a woman and child are visible sitting to the right of it. Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
