Description
Photograph of a view of Redondo Beach looking towards the city from the pier, 1891. People stroll along the boards on the pier at left, to the side of which railcar tracks can be seen. Two pile drivers stand tall to either side of the pier. Pedestrians and a horse-drawn carriage navigate the unpaved roads through the city in the distance. Several commercial shop fronts advertise themselves along the shore. A domed building is visible in the distance to the left. The ocean is visible to the right, along with the building for the Santa Fe Route of streetcars, one of which is pictured in front.; Legible signs include: "Field's Restaurant", "J. Murphy Saloon. / Wines and Liquors", "The Pavilion / Wines Liquors Cigars", "Ship Channelry / Groceries. Hardwares. Paints-Oils. / Gents Furnishing [...] / Bathing Suits. Boots and Shoes. Fishing Tackle.", and "Davis House".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
