Description
Photograph of "Walapai Bill", or Wi-su-i-pa-ma, a renegade living with the Havasupai Indians and his Havasupai wife, Ta-va-su-ja, a basket maker, ca.1900. He, sitting at right, wears a straw hat, dark trousers, a dark vest over a light shirt, and shoes. She, sitting at left, wears a brightly patterned cloth around her shoulders and a print dress. She holds a basket in her lap. They both sit on a blanket with her basket making supplies between them. They sit in the ramada of her rough stick and branch dwelling. A blanket with a zig-zag pattern hangs from the side of the dwelling.
