Description
Photograph of a view of Hill Street, looking south from Third Street, ca.1903. In the foreground at center, a wide road can be seen extending into the extreme background at center. Majority of the buildings that line either side of the street are commercial. Horse-drawn carriages, people on bicycles and pedestrians can be seen traveling down the unpaved street. Railway tracks line the center of the street. Utility poles line both sides of the street.; Legible signs include: "Tel., Sunset, Main, 10", "Tel., Home 10", "Bekins, van and storage, shippers & household goods, reduced rates", "Ferrell & Sutton Realty Co.", "Chapman Bros. Co.", "W.L. Snell, attorney at law", "Leo J. Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
