Abstract
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also known as
the Hare Krishna movement, is no stranger to controversy. Over the years, it has been a
relatively unknown and commonly misunderstood spiritual movement. Perhaps under
more scrutiny than the movement itself, are the small communities across the country,
which aim to sustain and expand the ISKCON lifestyle. The failure to understand the
purposes and intentions of these communes fuel existing misconceptions and exacerbate
negative social stigmas.
Whether ISKCON’s philosophies are relatable or pragmatic is not the focus of
this project. Rather by uncovering the day-to-day inner workings of one ISKCON
commune in Los Angeles, it attempts to outline the community’s basic principles, to
discern what attracts its devotees, and to highlight the movement’s social relevance in the
United States by correctly identifying its historical origin.
Through time spent in a commune, the piece profiles several devotees from
different backgrounds, with various motivations and paths to ISKCON. In-depth
interviews coupled with sequential, detailed video cues attempt to conceptualize footage
of daily life. These elements try to put seemingly arbitrary yet stringent rules of
communal life into perspective, display the nature and spiritual journey of the practicing
members, and portray the authenticity of community’s atmosphere. Through personal
accounts and additional research, I compare and contrast ISKCON to its more popular
counterpart, Hinduism. In doing so, I uncovered a community that dually functions as a
spiritual oasis and fine-tuned business model. The devotees daily service within the
iv
amenities of the commune serves as a means to evaluate one’s spiritual discipline and
fosters camaraderie with one another--all while advancing ISKCON’s broader goals.

My nature is kind of being an extremist. I
used to drink, smoke, do drugs. I came
from a wealthy family so I had everything I
needed. And I just enjoyed life. I thought I
was happy but not. After my mom die, I
had to really think. Do I want to live this
life I'm leading now. I want a future, but is
this going to be my future?

It seems like a great irony. Here these
people are trying to live a spiritual lifestyle
right in the middle of the most materialistic
city in the world.

OMKAR IS ALSO A DEVOTEE WHO

SOT: OMKARA DASA
MS of male devotee (adult) w/ baby

traditional clothing
Because when most people think of some
spiritual group of people living some
idealistic lifestyle- they think the way up in
the mountains, some very serene peaceful
setting. That’s the stereotype. But at the
same time- it’s so inaccessible. Now we’re
in the heart, in the core of all this
materialism and so it provides a very stark
contrast.
SOT: SVAVASA DASA BECA
NEW DWARKA PRESIDENT
Vertical pan of temple (from sky down to

We have quite a large community here,

has about 180 devotees. We’re probably

Ten years of doing the same thing should
feel like a routine- but everyday is
different, it's ever fresh. By following a
various rules and regulations, one becomes
very humble. This lifestyle is challenging
but it helps you develop into a better
person.

Both originate from the sacred Indian

WHEN SWAMI PRAHBUPADA
FOUNDED ISKCON, HIS GOAL WAS
TO ESTABLISH AND SPREAD A
UNIVERSAL RELIGION. BECAUSE HE
BELIEVED HINDUISM, LIKE MOST
FAITHS, WAS EXCLUSIVE.

SOT: PAVAKA DEVI DASI
ISKCON DEVOTEE AND STUDENT
Different shots of devotees and visitors
eating after a Sunday service (all shots
show diversity of devotees and people who
come visit temple)
Prahbupada often stressed ISKCON was a
universal science of how to worship the
Lord rather than designations conditioned
by time, place and culture. Krishna is not
only a Hindu God, but a God for all.
Swami Prahbupada believed the
association with Hinduism was failing to
attract people. He wanted to make the point
ISKCON was applicable to anyone
regardless of color, creed or caste.

Sequence of Prahbu reading and writing
in a book. (Shot is from statue in temple’s
museum.)
Shots of various books: using Hindu
thought in modern philosophical ideas
(ie. Anne Bessant's Theosophical Society)
Prahbupada blamed politicians and foreign
conquests for killing the spirit of Hinduism
in India. National figureheads chose parts
of Vedic scripture to push personal agendas
and doctrines. Over the years the invading
Muslims and British leveraged the term
Hinduism- in such a way to keep the moral
of India's people low. As a result, there was
a desire to emulate Western culture and
self professed yogis and authors used parts
Hinduism to preach empty philosophies. It
had evolved into a psuedo-religion.

Prabhupada's Position: The Hare Krishna
Movement and Hinduism”)

PAVAKA on screen again
Here was a man [Prahbupada] who was so
loyal to the complete and literal translation
of the Veda that he didn't even appreciate
Gandhi using parts of it to preach non-
violence. No matter how noble the cause. If
you were going to reference Vedic
scriptures, you had to do it whole-
heartedly. Just like you can't pick and
chose those who serve in Krishna
consciousness, You can't pick and chose
parts of the Veda to preach and times you
want to practice. He was a purist and that's
modern Hinduism was missing.

SOT: RADHA KRIPA
Sequences of Radha Kripa assisting

We have a congregation that attends
services every Sunday- who we appreciate
very much. But devotees who live in the
community want to immerse themselves in
eternal service. The way we walk, the way
we talk. From the time we wake up,
worship, and to the time we go to bed.

Sequence of Radha Kripa shifting through

Whatever you see here in this community,
it’s all done by us. We don’t get outside
help. We do require that devotees does put
in a certain amount of hours, in a give day,
in a given week. It has to be very essential
services for this community to go on, to
function. In exchange for that, the temple
is going to take care of you. And when I
say take of you, it means giving you a
space- either an apartment or a room and
supply you the necessities of life. And
although they may be simple, they are
there.

I like to talk, so I work at the temple gift
store. To have a gift store in LA is very
important because people wouldn’t be
attracted to our movement otherwise. So
we try to attract people using everything in
the material world. Most of the people who
come to the gift store would never look at a
devotee.
VO NARRATION

THE GIFT STORE DOESN’T CARRY

ANIMAL PRODUCTS OR SYNTHETIC
MATERIALS.

SOT: RADHA KRIPA
Shots of gift store products, continued
We believe that in Vedic culture-
everything should be natural. Like now we
see that there are so many unnatural things.
People are getting disease. They’re getting
sick. So by using natural products that are
coming from Mother Earth. We have
everything here.

We cannot focus our attention on what
other people think all the time. We
understand what we’re doing and we have
faith that what we’re doing is right. If
people have their misconceptions of what
we're doing then what are there
misconceptions all about? If we are happy
people then what are they looking at? What
fault are they finding in us? Everyone
wants to be happy.

WS, MS from across the street of Svasa and
Omkara talking to potential devotee.
You have a meeting with the individual.
We encourage them to come to the temple
first- for a few months, if they haven’t been
coming. Just to see their frame of mind and
so we do observe tem we try to develop a
relationship with them. And when we
become satisfied in their sincere endeavor
to become a devotee, then we have a 3-
month trial period.

SOT: RADHA KRIPA
Sequence of Radha Kripa chanting in
temple
It was very difficult. The first 3 months
were like hell. I couldn't get up in the
morning. Devotees would wake me up and
I would think. if I candle handle this one
year, I would become a devotee for the rest
of my life.
SOT: SVAVASA DASA BECA
WS of groups of men chanting, some
devotees go up to the alter for a blessings.
It pretty much tells us where the individual
is at. If they’re capable of rising early in the
morning and chanting on beads, studying
of the scripture and doing menial service in
the temple. We find that after 3 months,
whatever their intention was is pretty much
exposed. It gives us a really good idea it
gives us a pretty good idea of a person
being able to continue on in the ashram.
VO NARRATION

BUT, OBVIOUSLY, THIS IS A
CHALLENGING LIFESTYLE.
SOT: SVAVASA DASA BECA
WS of devotees listening to lecture
continued/ WS of Svasa giving sermon
Out of every four people that come live in
the ashram, out of those 4 probably 1 will
continue on.
SOT: OMKARA DASA Living in the ashram is an opportunity for
people to practice this lifestyle on a
continual basis. When you come within this
vicinity you can feel it, you can feel the
change of atmosphere. You feel like you
can relax, let your guard down-you feel that
camaraderie.
SOT: SVAVASA DASA BECA
MS, CU of Svasa giving sermon,
interacting with devotees
The Krishna temple here is like an oasis
within the city of LA. And if you stay
within that oasis, I don’t have to move out
of this block, and I don’t feel like I’m
missing anything.
VO NARRATION

MS of her husband
I had a deep-rooted desire also to get
married. And if you suppress that desire,
you will never be happy in Krishna
consciousness. And I waited for a while
and Krishna sent me a nice devotee. And
we want to have children, stay in the
community, and raise them.
13
SOT: SVAVASA DASA BECA
CU of Radha Kripa’s face (side)
Sequences: Radha Kripa and husband feed

They elected voluntarily to continue on
with the service in the temple. They said
they want to spend their life here and do
service and have the temple maintain them.
Which I’m happy to do.
NAT SOUND: MS of Priest chanting while

MS from below of priest giving final
blessing and showering flower petals on

The best part of living in this community is
the devotees. To see everybody serving
Krishna, we all have one common goal
even though we are from different parts of
the world. We are all just loving one
person and trying to do the best for that one
person makes it the greatest happiness we
can ever achieve. Best Times of my life
actually.
