Description

Photograph of a close-up view of players during a rugby game, ca.1910. In the center, a man is holding a rugby ball around his arm; he is wearing a striped shirt. A second man is extending his arms towards the ball; he is dressed with a unicolor shirt. Several men are surrounding them who seem to be standing behind the man with the ball; they are wearing either a striped shirt or a solid shirt. A crowd of people is observable in the background. Further in the back, a large building sitting on a hill can be seen behind a fence. The photograph may feature "an intercollegiate rugby game from the period of approximately 1910. Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
