Description

Photograph of a rugby game, showing large building in the background, ca.1910. To the left of the center, a man is holding a rugby ball with both hands, while a second man is grabbing him by the legs; one is wearing a striped shirt and matching striped socks while the other is dressed with a unicolor shirt. A third man is lying on the ground looking towards them. They are surrounded by several men who can be seen in either striped or solid shirts; those in solid shirts have a number on the back and a "V" on the front. A wooden wall can be seen further in the back. Large buildings stand predominantly on a hill in the background. The photograph appears to feature "an intercollegiate rugby game from the period of approximately 1910. For several years, USC did not play football but instead played rugby" -- a USC Digital Library Patron, December 4, 2015. Compares to CHS-42736 and CHS-42734; image shows a divergent perspective of the same location of this photograph.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
