Description
Photograph of a view of Western Avenue looking north from Wilshire Boulevard, ca.1924. What appears to be a small bus or delivery truck and an early automobile can be seen parked along the sidewalk to the right, which is lined with palm trees, while traffic makes its way down the paved avenue to the left. Farther back, a stop light can be seen. Nearly parallel to the right, the Standard Public Market can be seen on the corner beneath a bevy of billboards. Utility poles line the street to the left.; Legible signs from left to right include: "There's no cigarette within a mile of Camel", "Burton [...] Reality. Wilshire Blvd.", "Open All Nite", "Wall", "Ice", "636 So. Western Ave. William Wilson Co. Insurance, Rentals, Real Estate", "Keep an 'extra bed' in your closet. Holmes Dissappearing Bed Co. Display rooms -- Grand floor Pacific Electric Building", "Standard Public Market", "A beautiful roof forever -- Granda Tile. Investigate the cost. L.A. Pressed Brick Co.", "Be Safe! Biflex your car Front and Rear. Protection with distinction. E.A. Featherstone Inc. Distributers", "Foster and Kleiser", "Paulais. Candies, Pastries", "James J. Donahue", and "Pellissier Square".
