Description

Photograph of a golf tournament on Santa Catalina Island, ca.1920. In the center, a golf player is visible slightly bending down while holding a club. He is standing on a putting green area while a crowd of people stand in a semi-circle around it. In the foreground at right, three men are standing next to a film camera on a tripod while looking towards the player. The men are standing by a fence at left, which is enclosing a hole in the ground with a stone wall along its side. In the background at right, a hillside is visible with a line of utility poles along its slope. Further in the background at left, the large Casino building can be seen near a group of homes. The ocean can be seen in the horizon.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
