Description

Photograph of a chariot racing at Santa Anita Racetrack, ca.1950. Jockeys are sitting on individual chariots while a horse is straped to the vehicle carrying it towards the direction of the viewer. Each jockey is holding a whip on one hand and the horse's guiding straps on the other. They are all standing on a dirt track. Behind them, a white fence with tall lamps extend along the track. On the other side of the fence, houses and trees are noticeable. Mountain silhouettes are observable in the far background.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
