Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the Saint Elmo Hotel on Main Street, Los Angeles, ca.1890. The three-story Romanesque hotel stands eleven windows across, between two other building that are partially visible to either side. At center, over the main entrance, A balcony extends, which has been decorated in an American flag motif and on which several people stand. Below several other groups of people pose on the sidewalk among the signs affixed to the buildings.; Legible signs include: "Southern California Fire Insurance Co.", "Rail Road Tickets [...] Bought Sold Exchanged / Cut Rates", "Office of the Los Angeles Steam Laundry Co. [...] Called For [...] Returned [...] Day", "Excursion", "Evan[...] & Cornwill[...] Gentleman's Neckwear", "[...] Fine Furnishings for Men", "Hosiery", "Shirts" and "Crockery and Glassware".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
