Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the Art Theatre in Redondo Beach, ca.1910. To the right, the box office can be seen, a decorative sign encrusted with lights to the above it which reads "Art Theatre" and below presents a sign that says "Paramount Pictures". To the left, a larger, less ornamental section of the building is shown, with windows that appear to be covered by curtain on the interior. In front of this section, a cart can be seen which advertises pop corn and peanuts.; Legible signs from left to right include: "Cigar Factory No. 121", "Paramount Pictures. 'Heliotrope'", "Heliotrope: a Paramount Pictures Cosmipolitan Production", "Nature's Contrasts. To travel is to possess the world. Burton Holmes", "Exit", "Entrance", and "Art Theatre. Opens 6:45. Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
