Description

Photograph of sailboats on the ocean, showing riders severely tilting their bodies, ca.1930. At center, two riders greatly lean to the left as the sailboat tilts to the right into the water. Both riders are wearing lightly-colored clothing and hats, and sit atop the darkly-colored sailboat. The lightly-colored sail is striped, and a picture of women's shoes is seen etched at the top of the sail. In the background, two other sailboats are visible. In the extreme background, a large house is seen surrounded by trees and bordered with a fence.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
