Description
Photograph of the Southern Pacific Long Wharf and the nearby Fisherman's Village in Santa Monica, ca.1913. The wharf is in the background at right and is a tall pier that extends past the edge of the image. There is a wide patch of sandy beach occupying the foreground, and small waves are gently breaking on the shore at left. The fisherman's village is at the base of a line of steep cliffs at right. There are several small buildings as well as many small fishing boats in the village. A small group of people is standing on the beach in the background at center, and a flock of seagulls is flying over the pier. The Southern Pacific Long Wharf, or Mile Long Pier, was the longest wharf in the world at four thousand, seven hundred feet long. It was started in 1892 and completed in 1894.
