Description

Photograph of a lit tennis court at night, ca.1940. Brilliant lights illuminate the stretch of the tennis court, which is divided into four recreational sections. The area is surrounded by a wire fence and each section is marked off by interior fences and several benches where spectators sit. While no one is seen playing on the courts, several people sit at the benches. In the background are rows of houses and the lights of the city, which is steeped in darkness. In the foreground is a shadowed mass of foliage.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
