Description
Photograph of a view of Southern Pacific's Long Wharf, or Mile Long Pier in Los Angeles, ca.1900. The wharf, 4700 feet long and the longest wharf in the world at the time of its creation, is pictured at center, snaking out towards the right distance of the image. In the foreground, a train of empty freight cars can be seen on the leftmost of the two sets of railroad tracks that run along the wharf. The wharf was begun in 1892 and completed two years later in 1894.
