tu, delicada
for percussion trio
Andrew V. Ly
March 2010
Program Notes:
tu, delicada for percussion trio takes its title from a line in Neruda's poem "Oda a la Tormenta" (Ode to the
Storm). The piece is a semi-programmatic interpretation of the poem, although only the last two movements
refer to subjects described in the poem. The first movement is an extended prelude that evokes the
atmosphere of a forest before the storm; wood and skin instruments are played with fingers only. The second
movement describes the storm itself and introduces metal instruments and the use of mallets. The third
movement is the apotheosis of the storm, when its destructive nature is reconciled with the nourishing "green
rain" that it provides. Pitched percussion instruments are used for the first time here: tuned bottles and
glasses. To reflect the creative element that the rain represents, the third movement is wholly improvised by
the players using guidelines of instrumentation and duration that I have prescribed. This piece is my first
foray into percussion writing and was written in collaboration with percussionist Alex Singer.
