Description

Photograph of exterior view of the Marine Exchange, showing rooftop, July 1938. The walls of the roof run from the foreground at left to the background at right. Small, rectangular structures with doors line the left side of the roof. A row of three larger structures stand along the center, while a similar building sits in the leftmost corner. A small set of stairs leads to a doorway on each of these buildings. A tower antenna can be seen on one of the structures to the right of center, and a smaller antenna is visible on the roof of the building in the corner. In the background at left, a large flagpole can be seen supporting a small, darkly-colored flag. The ocean is visible in the background with two large ships along the water.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
