Description
Photograph of native mat houses and native family feast, Hawaii, 1896. About eighteen people, mostly women, can be seen sitting on the ground around a meal. The woman at the head of the table turns toward the camera, but most of the adjacent row faces the table. Behind the group at the center and left, two grass houses are visible. A single window is visible on the side of the structure at center beneath a large layer of grass. The image has been edited, showing a thick line drawn around the border of the roofs of the houses and horizon.
