Description
Photograph of a view of Main Street north from Court Street in the Temple Block, Los Angeles, ca.1925. The building on the corner at left has two stories, while the next three buildings to the right have three. The top of the International Savings and Exchange Bank Building (1905-1955) is visible behind these buildings; it was located on Temple Street, between Spring and Main Streets and was the only older building left standing within the new City Hall block. All of the buildings visible have flat roofs and many tall, narrow windows. Most of the buildings are filled with shops, and several awnings advertising these shops project over the sidewalk from the first story. The street at right is lined with early-model automobiles, and several pedestrians are visible on the sidewalk. Additional information: a portion of the Post Office and Federal Building (1910-1937) can be seen to the right of the northernmost structure in the Temple Block. The building was located at the corner of Main and Temple Streets. It replaced the Downey Block, and was, in turn, replaced by the new Federal Courthouse in1938. The St. Elmo Hotel can be seen to the right of the Post Office. That was the latest "incarnation" of the original Lafayette Hotel (built in the early 1850s), which was renamed the Cosmopolitan Hotel in 1875, before becoming the St. Elmo Hotel. This building was demolished in 1937 for the new Federal Building. Along with the Bella Union and United States Hotels, the Lafayette was one of the first hotels in Los Angeles.
