Description
Photograph of grammar school children posing with their teachers on the steps of their school in Monrovia, Los Angeles, ca.1889-1890. The students are seated in five rows up and down the steps of the schoolhouse, whose door in the background appears to be open. A teacher stands to the left at the top step and nonchalantly puts his hands into the pockets of his vest. Further down, near the third row of students, a female teacher stands with her hands folded across her waist. The top row of students seems to be older than the preceding four rows; all of the boys are wearing a suit of some kind, and all the girls are wearing dresses.
