Title
View of Sixth Street east from Hill Street showing several large buildings, 1909
Description
Photograph of a view of Sixth Street east from Hill Street showing several large buildings, 1909. Sixth Street is at center and runs away from the viewer. It is marked by streetcar tracks and has broad sidewalks on both sides. There are many pedestrians crossing the street at center, and horse-drawn wagons and early automobiles are parked near the sides of the road. The left side of the street is lined with small buildings containing shops, while the right side has several large buildings that are at least six stories high. Legible signs include, from left to right, "Hennelly Hat Manufacturer", "Rooms", "The Meyberg Co.", and "H. Jevne Co.". The photograph features the following buildings: Lindley Building (built in 1887) can be seen at immediate left, while John H. Norton Block (built in 1906) is visible at immediate right ("H Jevne Co"). Walter P. Story Building (built in 1910) can be seen located at south-east corner of 6th Street and Broadway; Hotel Hayward (built in 1906) is visible at south-west corner of 6th Street and Spring Street; Grosse Building (1906-1957) at south-east corner of 6th Street and Spring Street; Pacific Electric Building (built in 1904) at south-east corner of 6th and Main; Kerckhoff Building (built in 1908) on the north-east corner of 6th Street and Main Street. Please note a license plate on the automobile at the near right. It is what was called a "dogbone" -- porcelain on metal plate, -- issued by the Automobile Club of Southern California from 1909-1913, before the State began issuing license plates.
