Photograph of a view of Main Street looking north from 4th Street, Los Angeles, ca.1924. The street is busy with pedestrian, automobile and streetcar traffic. Prominent buildings are the Van Nuys Hotel (at left), Hotel Westminister (at right), and the [...] National Bank building (at left). The bank building features Greek-like architecture while the other buildings along the street are more contemporary. Further down the street, directly above traffic hangs a sign that reads: "Stop". Other legible signs include: on a cable car "Sierra Madre, 716", license plates on vehicles "1-109-186, 644-544", street signs "vehicles must not stnad between here and next corner, ordinance no. 2[...]51; no parking in loading zone, 45 minute parking 7 A.M to 4 P.M., no parking 4 to 6:15 P.M., Auto Club, So. Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
