Description
Photographs of a view of Los Angeles Street and 8th Street, Los Angeles, 1924. A traffic officer, standing on a small platform, directs traffic at the center of the intersection. Cars are passing by in both directions of the street as a man tries to cross the street. A sign in the foreground reads: "keep to right". Majority of the buildings along the street are over three-stories tall. Ads on buildings can be seen on buildings in the distance. Utility lines zigzag across the street.; Legible signs include: "wholesale shoes", "[...] park", "auto parts", "H.S. Goldwater Co., wholesale men's furnishings, overalls, khaki clothing, pants, belts, gloves, sweaters, shirts, hoiery, underwear, suspenders, handkerchiefs", "Shauer Brothers Company Inc., manufacturers, wholesalers, exporters, wearing apparel for men & boys, Shauermade", "parking, open all night", "Heywood, [...]field, wal[...]", "calm rooms", "dependable printers [...]", "Zendejas treatment", "auto park", "parking", on a posted parking sign "45 minute parking, 7:00 A.M. to 8:45 P.M.".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
