Description
Photograph of a Railway Express Agency local delivery dock, showing packages being prepared for dispatch, ca.1940. Conveyor belts can be seen leading down the center of the warehouse interior, boxes moving along them. To the left, smaller, self-contained belts lead to the open backs of truck, into which it appears boxes are being loaded. To the right, a collection of signs read "Twinkle twi[nkle] little star, do [not] drop it from t[he] car. If workin[g] [on] the line, hand[le] each piece as [though] it were thine", "Look sharp, be sharp. Ring the bell. Chase old man claim down the well", and other, illegible signs.; Photoprint reads: "Railway Express Agency, Inc. 357 Aliso Street, Los Angeles. Los Angeles local delivery assort dock showing packages being prepared for dispatch in street vehicles and conveyer operation".

Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960
Description
The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
