Description
Photograph of a crowd on the Avalon beach welcoming the steamer Cabrillo to Catalina Island, ca.1904. The steamer is at left and is approaching a wooden pier that enters the water at right. The large boat is belching smoke from a large smokestack at center, and two large masts display an array of signal flags. In addition, there is a small glass bottom side wheeler boat in the foreground at left. The crowd of people is gathered on the shore in the foreground and is watching the approaching ship. A flag pole is at center. The steep mountainous end of the island is visible in the background.
