Description
Photograph of a drawing by Edward Vischer depicting the Southern Overland Stage Station and watering place in San Luis Obispo, ca.1865. The stage coach moves along the mountains to the left, a lone horseman farther down the road to the right, while a cowboy waters two of his horses at a wooden well in the foreground, which has a bucket suspended by a long, weighted pole. Two more horses are visible with a man entering the wooden building to the right, which likely represents the station. Children play, sitting on rocks beneath the flagpole to the extreme right, where the American flag flies. Signs on the wooden building read "$10,000 Race" and "Circus". Text written-in below the image identifies the area and place.
