Title Interior view of atrium inside of the Gail Borden Jr. residence in Alhambra, shown at an angle, ca.1902-1908
Description Photograph of interior view of the atrium inside of the Gail Borden Jr. (1801-1874; of condensed milk fame) residence in Alhambra, shown at an angle, ca.1902-1908. This Moorish-style atrium consists of columns supporting arches forming a rectangular center, where a glass ceiling provides greenhouse-like sunlight. In the center is a fountain or multi-level platform where a variety of plants in vases are displayed. Spread around the patio are several wooden chairs, several ferns, a variety of other types of plants, and two bird cages. Parts of the floor are covered with decorative rugs.; "Borden sold another house to W.I. Hollingsworth" -- picture file card. "American philanthropist, businessman, and inventor, who envisioned food concentrates as a means of safeguarding the human food supply. He was the first to develop a commercial method of condensing milk, and the dairy company founded by him (renamed Borden, Inc., in 1968) expanded and diversified to become a sizable conglomerate." -- unkown author.
