Photograph of an exterior view of the Willow Springs Mine and Stage Station, Kern County, ca.1900. A wheelbarrow and other farming implements stand to the left of center in a dirt clearing in the middle of several one-story buildings. A wheeled machine covered by a cloth and what appears to be a can of gasoline stand to the left. In the background the buildings are visible: to the right the building is made of rough-cut stone and features a wooden back edge. In the direct background, a similar building is shown from the front, no back edge visible, a tree and a utility pole standing in front of it. A taller, more narrow stone hut is visible with an eaves-shaded porch to the left.

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
