Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the Alpine Tavern on Mount Lowe, [s.d.]. Built in 1898, the tavern was destroyed by fire in 1939. The two-story stone and wood structure is nestled in a grove of sycamore, pine and oak trees. A stone retaining wall can be seen in the foreground, and a tunnel can be seen at right.; "Railway agents seek arson clews [sic] at ruin of historic tavern -- Pacific Electric special agents, not satisfied that there were no arson clews in the $20,000 fire which destroyed historic Mt. Lowe Tavern last Tuesday morning, yesterday returned to the mountain peak scene of havoc to investigate further into the causes of the blaze. -- While C.C.C. youths and railway employees, bent to the task of clearing away the debris of the 41-year-old Southland chalet, Chief Special Agent C.R. Smith and officials of the Pacific Electric poked through the ruins for possible arson clews. -- The afternoon of the day when fire consumed Mt. Lowe Tavern a Sheriff's arson squad announced that the blaze began in the inn's pantry. A short circuit within the motor of the refrigerator air compressor was asscribed [sic] by Deputy Sheriff Rankin and Carroll as the cause. -- Agents Smith and W.M. Slater of the railroad, however, remained at the almost inaccessible mountain peak all day yesterday.
